Back to top Gauteng Branch GAUTENG SPRING FUNCTION In a break with a by now established tradition, the Gauteng Spring Function was held early this year instead of on Heritage Day. The meeting was hosted by Frank and Mandy Pascoe at the Randfontein Golf and Country Club and was well supported by 61 people, ranging from elderly ex-cadets to young toddlers, and one visitor from the UK. Tom Fraser once again entertained us by supplying the music and acting as MC, Eric Moir said grace and Ivor Little proposed the toast to the ship. There was the usual clowning around with the microphone and Ian Thurston supplied us with a couple of Norfolk country ditties. The Gauteng OBA choir (established for the purpose and disbanded in ignominy immediately afterwards) attempted a pair of songs but made a fair success of "For Those In Peril On the Sea". A message was received from the good ship "Babushka" (where Alan Ford was out at sea on the Vaal Dam) wishing us well. A few of the more energetic members then took to the dance floor as the rest quietly took their leave, the last stragglers departing in time to get home for supper. Those cadets attending were: Frank Wheeldon (41/42), who received the prize for the oldest "Old Salt" present by mistake, as it should have gone to James Robinson (39/40); Gordon Bennett and Laurie Barnes (46/47); Rene Poerner (48/49); Tony Davis (48/50); Drummond Terry (50/51); Vic Albert, Graham Jooste and Ken van der Walt ( 52/53); Tony Hunter, Ivor Little and Eric Moir (53/54); Tony Jacquet and John Orrock (54/55); Archie Campbell and Brian Glass (55/56); Alistair Douglas (58/59); Ian Thurston (Worcester 58/59); Frank Pascoe and Steve Hearn (59/60);John Driver (60/61); Fred Marais (61/62);Brian Preiss (64); Dave Sharrock (74);Tom Fraser (79) and Dave Atkinson (85), who received the prize for being the youngest chum present. Our next meeting will be in March 2006 at a date and venue to be announced. Ivor GAUTENG BRANCH COMMISSIONING DAY FUNCTION The Gauteng Branch held its Annual Commissioning Day luncheon on Sunday 13 March at the Golden Harvest II Restaurant in Strydom Park, as guests of Frank and Shirley Wheeldon. This is a delightful venue and our hosts had gone out of their way to ensure that we had a private dining room with a blue and white colour scheme carried down to the serviettes and table cloths, and a specially printed white and silver menu with our badge on it. The food was outstanding, particularly the baked alaska dessert, and the company and fellowship was as usual top class. Forty nine people attended and we had nineteen apologies. A special surprise for all those attending was that on this occasion we had a floor show. One of our members, Tom Fraser, does professional entertaining as a "hobby" and volunteered to share his talents with us. The result was a wonderful free and easy afternoon. Tom sang all the old "over forty" favourites and "Sweet Caroline" and the "Green, Green Grass of Home" had everybody singing along and "rocking". Dedicated to all ex-Safmariners, "New York. New York" almost brought the house down. Alan Ford and Ken van der Walt who were sitting directly in front of the speakers are still wandering around in a state of shock! We even tried a few old "Bothie" traditional songs, but nobody knew anything other than the first lines, so it was left to Ian Thurston of the "Old Worcester" brigade to come forward with an old Norfolk ditty which was hilarious! Frank Wheeldon said Grace and we presented him with a selection of old photographs of his favourite ship, the "Dalia", as a small token of our appreciation for hosting us. Ivor Little read out the apologies and a letter of goodwill from the Cape Town Branch and proposed the toast to "The Ships" (we had "Worcesters" present). The prize for the most senior Old Salt went to James Robinson (39/40) and for the most junior Chum to Tom Fraser (1979). John Driver passed around some photographs of the Bothie in 1961 for all to see. In answer to a special request, a male voice choir was formed by conscripting one male from each table to join in the singing of the first verse of "For Those In Peril On The Sea", after which, it being time to go home for supper, most of us adjourned although the party did continue on for a bit longer. A jolly good time was had by all. Those ex cadets attending were James Robinson (39/49), Frank Wheeldon (41/42), Bill Leader and Eddie Page (44/45), Laurie Barnes and Gordon Bennett (46/47), Gordon Cross (47/48), Rene Poerner (48/49), Vic Albert, Mike Crewe, Ken van der Walt and Jac van Leeuwen (52/53), Tony Hunter and Ivor Little (53/54), Tony Jacquet (54/55), Archie Campbell (55/56), Alistair Douglas (58/59), Ian Thurston (OW 1959), Frank Pascoe (59/60), John Driver (60/61), Brian Preiss (1964), Alan Ford (1971), and Tom Fraser (1979). Our next function will be at the Randfontein Club in September and will be hosted by Frank and Mandy Pascoe. GAUTENG BRANCH GOLF DAY The Gauteng Branch is busy organising its first golf day. Reunion of the 1957 and 1958 intake years HERE The class of 1953/54 held its 50th reunion over the weekend of 19 to 22 March 2004. The reunion took the form of a "nostalgia" weekend for shipmates and their wives/partners at the former SANC "General Botha", now the SA Naval College in Gordon's Bay. The weekend was a resounding success. The SA Navy went out of its way to accommodate these ex-cadets and to make them feel welcome. Old shipmates who had not met for 50 years were able to get together for a time of fun, reminiscing and enjoyment. They slept in the same dormitaries, used the same bathrooms, reacted to the same bugle calls, paraded for "colours" and "sunset", drank the pub dry on the first night and had a wonderful seven course reunion meal in the old dining room. Sunday church was held in the old wooden rec hall/chapel and the service was led by Les Green who had musical assistance from Don Oliver on the piano, Eric Moir on the keyboard and Leading Seaman Marius Pheiffer on the trumpet. The reunion outing took the form of a bus trip to "Oude Nektaar" wine farm for a fabulous lunch hosted by the owner Hans Schroder, followed by a scenic drive to "tea" at Raoul Beaumont's wine farm at Bot River, before returning via the coast road to Gordon's Bay. The Navy then put on a farewell barbecue on the beach outside Gus' old house and the group dispersed the next morning after breakfast. The Bothie house flag was flown at the yard arm for the duration of the reunion. The following 1953/54 ex-cadets and their wives attended: John Andrews, Frikkie Bester, David Bell, Bill Cope, Chris Copeland, Keith Croome,Barry Cullen, Bill Du Sautoy, Okkie Grapow, Les Green, Ernest Hinterleitner, Tony Hunter, Dennis Jones, Bryan Lawrence, Ivor Little, Haig Mitchell, Eric Moir, Don Oliver, Keith Quayle, Gerry Stallling, Doug Wales and Godfrey White. Representing their "old salt's" (1952/53) were Peter Bitzker, Pat Browne, Brian Greenwood, Graham Jooste, Danny Le Roux and Jamie Matthew. Representing the "chums" (1954/55) were Mike Cullen, Ted Fisher, Dave Howard, Colin Knowler, Len Luyt, Ian Morrall, and Hans Schroder. Alistair Mackay (1944/45) attended to represent the staff at the time and Tony Nicholas (1971) was there in his capacity of Chairman of the OBA to represent that body. Apologies were received from a further 18 ex cadets of the time. The ladies were bunked in the naval midshipmaids accommodation from where they enjoyed the reunion every bit as much as did their menfolk and the considered opinion is that the whole reunion was an unqualified success.
